2026 NC BikeWalk Transportation Summit: Safety Starts with Learning

For those of us fortunate to attend last week’s Carolina Beach-hosted NC BikeWalk Transportation Summit, we came home knowing more about:
•    the differences between e-bikes, higher-powered electric cycles and e-motos—and why those distinctions matter regarding road, path and trail safety
•    a North Carolina law that, since 2013, has restricted state funding for independent bicycle and pedestrian improvement projects
•    how to make transportation safer for everyone, specifically regarding:
o    use of road rumble strips
o    livable and age-friendly communities
o    practical safety action plans
o    integrating bike safety into schools
o    North Carolina active transportation (walk, bike, roll) success stories

One key through line for improving safety—in any environment:
1.    Understand the problem. 
2.   Use what you've learned to resolve it.
