Our 13th annual 3-day BikeWalk North Carolina (BWNC) Transportation Summit started today in Chapel Hill and is a key event for North Carolina policy makers to learn best practices designed to improve non-motorized transportation accessibility and road safety for all. This year we are particularly fortunate to feature 4 highly relevant and accomplished guest speakers:
- John Bauters
- Council member and former Mayor of Emeryville, California
- Leader in sustainable land use, affordable housing, environmental justice, and active transportation policies
- Secured millions of dollars in state and federal funding for safety, public transit, and car-free transportation infrastructure projects to Alameda County
- Barkha Patel
- Director of Infrastructure for the City of Jersey City, NJ, one of the most densely-populated, transit-rich, and ethnically diverse cities in the US
- Responsible for the development of many of Jersey City’s most transformational initiatives including an on-demand micro-transit system, a robust network of protected bikeways and safe streets, a renowned plaza program and innovative parks and public spaces
- Ryan Sharp
- Director of Transportation and Parking for the City of Hoboken since 2017
- Oversees Hoboken's award-winning Complete Streets and Vision Zero Programs, which have received national acclaim after seven consecutive years without a traffic death
- Anna Zivarts
- Is a low-vision parent, nondriver and author of When Driving Is Not an Option: Steering Away from Car Dependency (2024)
- Actively engages non-drivers in road planning and policy-making
