Cyclo-Cross in Hickory and Improving Road Safety For All

Breitz! is more than a business venture. Yes, as a lifelong road cyclist, I want to get bright, bold performance wear on cyclists, runners and pedestrians to make a disruptively positive influence on improving road safety for all. You'll see some explosive Wray Ward created designs very soon. You can also make the most of deeply discounted "6 Feet, Thanks!" wear right now.

At the same time, "road safety for all" is a comprehensive effort that requires multiple points of approach working together like individual pistons in an engine firing in synch to put a car in motion. One of those points of approach is supporting local efforts that raise the profile of man-powered transportation, like the hugely successful North Carolina Cyclo-Cross (NCCX) races we had in Hickory last Sunday.

That event actually kicked off Saturday with a social the Hickory-based DeFeet Socks Clubhouse right on the Hickory City Walk multi-use path. As you can see above, the clubhouse is an innovative, cycling-centric spot and a great venue to welcome racers and race supporters.

Racers then loved the challenge of the new Hickory course that wrapped around LP Frans Stadium, home of the Hickory Crawdads. Credit to a wildly successful day to our Hickory Rec. and Parks Sports Tourism department and NCCX race support professionals.

Best of all, those races put an exclamation point on other local long-term efforts in progress, like:
  • Our Western Piedmont Council of Government's Transportation Safety Plan in works with NC Dept. of Transportation and through the outstanding contracted help of VHB community/infrastructure planners
  • Hickory's foot-on-gas efforts to complete a network of multi-use trails by next year
  • Our soon-to-launch business and community-led Safe Streets For All initiative designed to supplement current rules, regulations and enforcement policies - and turn down the trend in ever-increasing traffic crashes

As a now 4-year Hickory resident, business owner and engaged public service participant, it is great to live in a vibrant city where people identify problems and then actively work to fix them as efficiently as possible - all in times involving extraordinary change.

 Love it!
