Power of Friends on Bikes: 3rd Annual Emory's Ride to Cure Type 1 Diabetes

I love the thrill of riding a bike when weather changes, especially when it changes from worse to better like it did yesterday. And that kind of change is exactly the right metaphor for yesterday's 3rd Annual Emory's Ride to cure autoimmune disease, type 1 diabetes, that destroys blood sugar-regulating insulin in the pancreas and therefore requires insulin therapy to keep blood sugar in check.

Emory is the bright, active high school-aged daughter of good friends, Bruce and Paige Monks, who developed type 1 diabetes not too many years ago. Shortly after first ensuring that Emory got the most appropriate medical help possible, Paige, an intrepidly feisty cancer survivor herself, along with her husband, Bruce's, steady side-by-side support, started organizing Emory's Ride to help fund type 1 diabetes research and education as outlined below.

Yes, we had a little rain yesterday morning, but that made barely a dent in the power of friends on bikes to participate in an effort focused on making steady progress in both the treatment of a disease that strikes indiscriminately and improved quality of life for those like Emory and others.

Thanks Paige, Bruce and our spirited Hickory area bike family for purposefully inspiring times with you on and off the bike!
